Citizen by Choice.
Public Servant by Calling.

Denise Paul Hatch is a former elected Marion County Constable, community advocate, small business owner, and mother of five who has dedicated her life to serving others and standing up for the people of Indianapolis.

Denise immigrated to the United States from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and became an American citizen by choice. Her journey reflects a deep belief in the promise of America—that hard work, education, and service can create opportunity and strengthen communities.

A dedicated student from an early age, Denise began college at just 16 years old and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from New Hampshire College.

Her introduction to public service came when she worked as a U.S. Senate intern for John Durkin, gaining first-hand experience in how government decisions affect everyday people.

Family and Faith

Denise is married to a disabled U.S. Navy veteran, and together they raised five children, all of whom pursued higher education.

Her life has always centered on family, service, and faith. Denise practices  Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism and chants Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, a prayer for wisdom, compassion, and peace in the world.

This spiritual practice reinforces her belief that every person has dignity and that society improves when people commit themselves to helping others.

Small Business Owner and Community Builder

Denise built and operated a construction company, creating jobs and helping improve neighborhoods. Through her work in housing, she also became a landlord, gaining first-hand insight into the challenges families face when trying to find safe and affordable housing.

These experiences shaped her understanding of the economic pressures many families face today—from rising rents to increasing utility costs.

A Life of Service

Long before running for office, Denise was deeply involved in serving her community.

She has:

  • Cooked meals and fed the homeless

  • Provided housing for individuals in need, including a veteran who was unable to access services from the VA

  • Helped a young single mother falsely accused of drug trafficking navigate the justice system until her charges were dismissed

Denise believes leadership begins with compassion and the willingness to stand beside people during their most difficult moments.

Standing Up for the Community

Long before running for office, Denise was deeply involved in serving her community.

Denise has never been afraid to speak out when government fails to serve the people.

In 2022, she helped pressure officials to reopen the Julia Carson Transit Center, restoring an important public transportation hub for residents of Indianapolis who rely on public transit to get to work, school, and essential services.

Her advocacy and dedication to community service eventually led her to run for office and serve as an elected constable, continuing her mission of fairness, safety, and accountability.

Civic Engagement

Denise has long believed that democracy works best when everyday people get involved. She volunteered for presidential campaigns including Barack Obamaand Bernie Sanders, supporting efforts to expand opportunity and strengthen communities.

These experiences reinforced her belief that leadership should always be rooted in listening to people.
